Devotees joined millions of fellow worshippers at the mass bathing festival in India, weeks after a stampede at the event killed at least 30.

Pilgrims arrived in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to take a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam River on the occasion of Maghi Purnima during the Maha Kumbh Mela festival on Wednesday, February 12.

Maghi Purnima marks the end of the Magha month in Hinduism and is a time for spiritual reflection, purification, and charity.

The government reported a footfall of 19.5 million by 8pm on Wednesday, with a total of more than 482 million attending so far.

Footage shows a helicopter showering flower petals on pilgrims at the Sangam River.

In another clip, devotees can be seen performing rituals in the water, while some were also paying respects to five-legged cows during the event.

On January 29, tens of millions had gathered to take a holy dip at the Maha Kumbh Mela when chaos erupted around 1:30 am.

Akanksha Rana, the special executive officer for the festival, stated that the devastating stampede occurred after a crowd control barrier broke.

Police confirmed that 30 devotees were killed, while 60 others were injured during one of the holiest events in the country.

A Rapid Action Force was deployed to restore order and assist with rescue efforts.

The Maha Kumbh festival, held every 12 years, began on January 13. Considered the largest human gathering on Earth, it celebrates India's cultural and spiritual traditions. Authorities had expected at least 450 million devotees to participate in the holy dip during the 45-day event this year. This number has already been exceeded.
