Philippine Red Cross officers rescued stranded residents from flooded homes in the Philippines.

Some 143 volunteers and staff were dispatched to evacuate locals from the flood-stricken city of Puerto Princesa City on Palawan island, on February 11.

Video shows personnel helping the residents and their pets onto a boat to escape the deluge.

Authorities said more than 1,000 families in the island province were displaced by floods spawned by record rains this week.

Provincial disaster management office chief Jeremias Alili said at least five people have died.

The local council has declared a state of calamity in the region, allowing the local government to quickly disburse funds for disaster response operations.

Officials said they were still assessing damages to fisheries and farmlands in the province.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the flood was caused by the northeast monsoon, and the shear line or the intersection of cold monsoon winds with warm air from the easterlies.

The provincial disaster management office said more than 2,000 people were taken to evacuation centres as the inclement weather was expected to last until Wednesday, February 12.
