At 11:33 am on February 13, a powerful explosion rocked the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Xitun District, Taichung City, Taiwan. Dashcam footage captured the moment of the blast, which completely destroyed the exterior wall of one floor, filling the area with thick smoke.

According to Taichung's fire department, the explosion occurred in the food court on the 11th floor. Preliminary investigations suggest that construction work may have accidentally ruptured a gas pipeline, leading to a leak and subsequent explosion.

The blast caused severe damage, shattering glass and metal frames on the 11th floor and impacting entrances and walls on the first and second floors. As the incident happened during the busy lunchtime rush, the number of casualties was significant.

As of 1:30 PM, officials confirmed at least five deaths and 11 injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion, while Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te, has expressed condolences and called for a swift inquiry into the incident.
