A stray dog with his mouth cruelly tied shut with rubber was rescued by locals in Thailand.

The two-year-old male pooch was found by concerned locals abandoned on the roadside in Sukhothai, Thailand on February 3.

Footage shows the scared canine soaking on a puddle with water lilies to sooth its painful mouth bounded by rubber rope.

The injured dog was quickly saved by kindhearted locals who caught it with a net before the tight string was cut off.

Good Samaritans took the dog to the veterinarians who immediately treated its wound.

Aside from injuries, the dog suffered from dehydration, anaemia, and infection as the wound started to rot around his face after a blood test.

Governor Noparit Sirikosol said: 'I received a report about the stray dog and dispatched officers from provincial livestock. Residents and local authorities helped.'

The canine was given medicine by medics to reduce pain and inflammation and would remain at the hospital.

He would stay in the hospital until it could be taken home by the governor who adopted the dog.
