The Spanish Olympic Committee paid tribute to Rafael Nadal at a special event to celebrate the 22-time Grand Slam winner's career in tennis.

Nadal was presented with a commemorative award and a photo of him with his gold medal from Rio de Janiero signed by various Olympic athletes.

The former world number one told his audience: "I'm not one of those who get up and see what's coming while laying on the couch. No. I always need something to do. This is a time to organise this new stage."

He also revealed that he hadn't picked up a racquet since retiring in November, adding that "I just need to disconnect for a while."
