Paris, France - February 10, 2025 As the World Trade Organization (WTO) navigates the complex landscape of artificial intelligence, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday stressed the urgent need for global participation in AI governance, citing China's crucial role in ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared equitably among all nations. Speaking at the AI Action Summit in Paris, she told Phoenix TV in an exclusive interview that every country must be involved due to AI's far-reaching impact, and China's participation is vital in shaping the future of AI governance. Iweala also pointed out that the Global South countries are lagging in AI advancements. Given AI's profound implications for the global economy, technological progress, and social equity, she stressed that all nations must have a voice in shaping its future. With participation of all countries and multilateral cooperation emerging as a global consensus on AI governance, Iweala expressed hope that China, as a major global player, would continue leveraging its influence to promote equitable access to AI-driven opportunities and benefits worldwide. The AI Action Summit, which took place from Monday to Tuesday in Paris, France, drew representatives from nearly 100 countries and over 1,000 stakeholders from the private sector and civil society. During the two-day summit, heads of state and government and high-level representatives from more than 30 countries, along with leaders of international organizations, jointly signed a Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for People and the Planet.
