What started as a playful adventure turned into an unexpected challenge when two Aussie friends, Huw and Lachy, spotted a distant blip on the horizon near Ilha Grande, Brazil. Determined to investigate, they rented a kayak for $10 and set off toward what they soon realized was a much farther target, a massive cruise ship.

After two grueling hours of paddling, they reached the stern, greeted by amused passengers waving and recording their approach. Undeterred by their exhaustion, they searched for a way aboard, only to be met by the captain’s firm rejection. Refusing to give up, they stealthily paddled to the other side of the ship, hoping to sneak on unnoticed.

Just as they neared an unguarded platform, their plan was foiled by two crew members who emerged, wagging their fingers in disapproval. Their pirate dreams were dashed, and the defeated duo had no choice but to paddle back to shore, finally arriving past dark.

Huw says to Lachy ‘I wonder what that is. Can we kayak out there?’. We turn to our left. Kayaks for hire.

10 USD for 1 hour. Sounds great!

We start paddling. We get halfway. And realise it’s a lot further than expected.

BUT we were determined to get on board.
So we kept paddling.

Another hour passes. We finally make it to the stern of the ship. Passengers waving, laughing, and videoing us. Imagine their surprise. Being in the middle of the ocean, seeing two Aussie boys kayaking toward their ship.

We come around the side, hoping for an entrance. But as we pull up to the boarding dock, we are met with the captain of the ship. A stern ‘no’ he says. Shaking his head.

Still determined, and after being told to leave, we kayak around undercover to the other side of the ship.

We see no one guarding that side. And an empty platoon to board and investigate the ship. “This is our chance” we thought.

But alas, as we were one metre from parking our ship next to the cruise, 2 amigos came out. With a stern finger wave saying ‘no, no no.’

With our hopes and dreams shattered, we kayaked back, and finally made it to shore past dark.
