This is the terrifying moment feral passengers smashed a train window when they were unable to board as they rushed to join the bathing festival in India.

Hundreds of travellers waited for the Swatantrata Senani Express at Madhubani Railway Station to reach Prayagraj for Maha Kumbh Mela on February 10.

However, some were enraged when the locomotive arrived, and most of the air-conditioning coaches were locked.

Footage shows the chaos as an angry passenger shattered the glass from outside of the train.

A family beside the window was buried under sharp debris, and a mother was seen arguing with them while her relatives tried to calm her down.

The traveller who kicked the glass off quickly fled from the scene.

Station superintendent Rajesh Kumar said: 'We called the Railway Protection Force to control the crowd. However, many passengers still failed to board the train.'

Maha Kumbh Mela is a major Hindu pilgrimage festival where millions of devotees and tourists gather to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers, believing it cleanses sins and grants salvation.
