Germany: Michel Friedman Warns of Growing Threats to Jewish Life
Berlin, Germany - February 02, 2025 Prominent German-French publicist, lawyer, and former CDU politician Michel Friedman has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating safety of Jewish life in Germany, blaming decades of political inaction for the current climate of fear. In an interview, Friedman delivered a passionate critique of German politics, universities, and the rise of extremism. "For decades, not enough has been done," Friedman said. "The Sunday speeches - "resist the beginnings," "never again"- have not been implemented from Monday to Saturday. Otherwise, we wouldn't be in this situation, where Jewish life is under threat." Friedman, born in Paris in 1956 to Jewish Holocaust survivors saved by Oskar Schindler, has been a vocal advocate against antisemitism and racism for decades. He served as Vice President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany (2000-2003) and was a member of the CDU federal executive board from 1994 to 1996. However, on January 30, 2025, Friedman resigned from the CDU, condemning the party’s decision to vote alongside the AfD on migration policy as a "dramatic breach of a fundamental taboo."ѻҀFull Interview Transcript (Translated into American English)"For decades, not enough has been done. The Sunday speeches - ‘resist the beginnings,’ ‘never again’ - have not been implemented from Monday to Saturday. Otherwise, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in today, where Jewish life is under threat. It is threatened by radical Muslims here in Berlin every day, threatened by left-wing extremists, but most of all by right-wing extremists. They are the only ones who now actively shape politics in the Bundestag and regional parliaments. "Jewish life is in the worst state it has been in for decades because all political parties have failed to keep their promises. This shows the failure of politics. The state must guarantee and ensure that I, as a Jewish student, can walk on campus with joy and without fear. Yet what we see are aggressive, sometimes violent radicals from the Islamist camp who support a terrorist organization. And the leadership of the university protects these terrorist supporters instead of the Jewish students. That is a declaration of bankruptcy. But politics must intervene, as these universities are funded by the state or the city. And once again, we hear a lot of talk and see too little action." "The AfD stands outside democracy. They say that human dignity is negotiable, and by doing so, they violate Article 1 of the German Constitution. The honorary chairman of the AfD has called the Third Reich ‘a mere speck of dust in history.’ For Jews, that is the greatest danger that exists - but not just for Jews. If Jews are forced to leave, then others will have to leave as well."
