Yaphank, United States - February 14, 2025 A deer is safe after a daring rescue on Long Island, where it fell through the ice of a frozen river at Southaven Park in Suffolk County. The Strong Island Animal Rescue League posted a dramatic video of the rescue, which was carried out by Frankie Floridia from Strong Island and Ryan Gilmartin from the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center. The 3-year-old doe had wandered onto the ice and plunged into the frigid water, presenting a serious challenge for the rescuers. “The ice kept getting thicker as we approached,” Gilmartin told WABC-TV, recalling the difficulty in reaching the deer. “But it became thin enough near the deer to push through.” After bringing the doe safely to shore, the animal was transported to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center. Officials confirmed she is recovering well and will soon be returned to the wild. Floridia expressed his relief, saying, “Seeing her standing, seeing her able to live another life, it’s just a great feeling.”
