A popular holiday island in the Philippines was put under a state of calamity due to severe flooding from a shear line.

Aerial footage shows a brown deluge spilling from a river and reaching roads in Palawan province - one of the tropical country's top destinations - on February 11 after days of non-stop rains.

The region experienced widespread flooding, affecting thousands of families, including five family members who died when their car was swept away into the river.

An information officer from Aborlan, Palawan, said: 'Two days after severe flooding affected parts of Aborlan, the situation in some areas remains critical.

'While floodwaters have begun to recede, many residents are still displaced and relying on evacuation centres for shelter and essential supplies.

'The Local Government Unit headed by the Municipal Mayor Jaime Ortega, in coordination with various agencies and organizations, continues to provide aid to families and individuals affected.

'Food, water, clothing, and medical supplies are being distributed, but challenges remain in reaching all affected communities due to damaged infrastructure and impassable roads.'

The agency added that ten evacuation centres remain operational across the municipality, housing thousands of individuals.

A shear line is a narrow zone where two air masses with different wind speeds or directions meet, creating turbulence and unstable weather conditions.
