STORYLINE:
Animated Chinese film "Ne Zha 2" has become a smash hit since its release.
The sequel continues the story of the iconic character Nezha, a rebellious boy-god from Chinese mythology.
Besides its stunning visuals, the film also stands out for its rich musical composition, which draws inspiration from distinctive ethnic songs.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): YANG RUI, "Ne Zha 2" music composer
"After learning about Mongolian long songs, Tibetan mountain songs, and Miao folk songs, I set my sights on the choral form of the Dong ethnic songs.
The vocal timbre of the Dong ethnic songs differs from other ethnic singing styles. Unlike the bright and resonant tones of some ethnic minority songs, they're relatively restrained.
Its unique feature is to imitate various sounds of nature. These elements come from nature and daily life, and the sense of harmony in their choral singing is remarkably strong. That's why I decided to give it a try.
The orchestration of this melody is perfectly suited to the vocal characteristics of the Dong ethnic songs -- bright yet restrained, sacred yet infused with everyday warmth. It also complements the visuals of the movie exceptionally well."
