STORYLINE:
At least 18 persons died and around two dozens were injured when a stampede occurred at the New Delhi railway station late on Saturday night, confirmed a government official.
The victims had gathered at the railway station to board a special train to Prayagraj district of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh to take the holy dip in "Triveni Sangam," the confluence of three rivers of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati during the ongoing spiritual festival "Maha Kumbh."
The stampede occurred due to confusion about the arrival of the train at one of the platforms at the railway station.
The dead bodies had been recovered and those injured were admitted to a local hospital for necessary medical treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences at the loss of human lives.
