US, Los Angeles: Calabasas Landfill Protest with Sound On Tape Part 1
Los Angeles, United States - February 15, 2025 02/15/2025 10:23 am (GMT-0800) CALABASAS, Calif. – Protesters gathered in the 5300 block of Lost Hills Road in Calabasas Saturday morning to protest against the toxic materials being dumped into a landfill close to nearby schools, a public park and residential community. A group of protesters had a close encounter with truck drivers, demanding that they not bring toxic materials that would endanger lives in the surrounding area. Protesters, many with messages on placards, lined the street and chanted at the trucks moving slowly past the crowd as they made their way to the landfill. One protester carried a sign that read, "Toxic Waste No Way!!! Protect our Kids Today!!!" At one point, protesters stopped a pickup truck, and once it was allowed to pass, a frustrated protester vented their anger by kicking the vehicle. Dallas Lawrence, President of the Las Virgenes Unified District Board of Education, attended the protest and was interviewed by Key News Network. Lawrence felt there were two major concerns: the landfill's proximity to multiple schools and a public park and the toxic waste's impact on children. According to Lawrence, this decision [to dump toxic waste] was not reviewed or discussed publically and brought toxic chemicals into a residential neighborhood. "The Army Corps of Engineers said they cannot guarantee toxic waste will not slip into this landfill," said Lawrence. "That is reason enough for us to stop this action."
