Police found a mother and daughter 'dead from swallowing insecticide' in a forest tent.

Marittes Rosane Cabaluna, 41, and her three-year-old daughter were discovered inside their makeshift shelter in Cebu, the Philippines, on January 28 at 10 pm.

Police said that the lifeless toddler was lying on her dead mum's back. Locals reportedly rushed the child to the hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.

Authorities speculated that their deaths were caused by a toxic chemical, as they found a sachet of insecticide at the scene.

Police Colonel Jovito Atanacio said they are conducting a more in-depth probe to determine whether there was foul play in the deaths of the mother and child.

'We are thoroughly looking into this case, gathering all necessary evidence, and delving into the background to determine the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident. Our commitment is to seek the truth and provide justice for the grieving family,' he added.

Police are awaiting the results of the forensic examination of the victims' bodies.
