Tourist police arrest Chinese 'chancer offering illegal tours' at temple in Bangkok
Police arrested a Chinese tourist who was allegedly offering illegal tours at a temple in Bangkok.
Lin Weijing, 41, reportedly charged money to tour holidaymakers around the capital city.
He was arrested by the tourist police on February 6, following complaints from local tour guides who claimed he was 'stealing their business' by working in a job reserved for Thai natives.
Footage shows Lin being escorted away from the Wat Phra Kaew temple.
Police General Kitrat Phanphet, the national police chief, said police were cracking down on foreigners working illegally in Thailand 'to build confidence among tourists'.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Piyapong Bukhuntod of the Tourist Police Investigation Division added: ‘The suspect was charged with working as a tour guide without a license and being a foreigner working in a prohibited occupation.
‘He was handed over to the inquiry officer at Chana Songkhram Police Station.'
Under Thailand's Foreign Employment Act, tourists are banned from working in dozens of occupations including tour guiding, labour work, agriculture, and hairdressing.
Violators may be fined 5,000 to 50,000 THB (120 to 1,200 GBP) and may face deportation to their home country. They will also be banned from seeking a Thai work permit for two years.
(1 GBP = 42.32 THB)
