Tornado rips through dozens of homes in Mississippi
A tornado ripped through dozens of homes in Mississippi.
The whirlwind damaged at least 20 residences in Columbia and knocked out power for around 100 customers on Wednesday, February 12.
Authorities said the EF-0 tornado, with peak winds of 85 mph (53 km/h), was on the ground for nearly two miles, toppling more than 70 power poles.
Footage by Kenny Brister shows the twister in front of a Walmart store as the storm swept through Marion County between 4:07 and 4:10 pm.
Despite the destruction, no injuries were reported.
Emergency crews worked to restore power and assess the full extent of the damage left by the weather phenomenon.
A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground. It can cause significant damage to anything in its path.
It is created when warm, moist air collides with cold, dry air, causing instability in the atmosphere, leading to rotating air currents.
The Tri-State Tornado is the largest and most devastating tornado in recorded history. It occurred on March 18, 1925, and traveled through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. This phenomenon caused extensive damage to agricultural fields, homes, and infrastructure along its path. It remains one of the most powerful and destructive tornadoes in history.
