Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - February 15, 2025 The 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of the Heads of State and Government concluded on Sunday with a call for addressing historical injustices and initiatives on the African development. The two-day summit, which brought together leaders of the AU member countries, was held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia under the theme "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations." The AU said that legacies of colonialism, trans-Atlantic slavery, apartheid, and systemic racial discrimination have left socio-economic, cultural, and psychological scars across the African people. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that the demand for reparations from former colonial powers aims at restoring the dignity of millions and heal the deep scars of poverty, inequality, and discrimination. Attendees proposed an Africa reparation fund for the continent's development. They also stressed the need for Africa to pool its resources and talents to promote digital inclusion in the continent.
