Highway users were met with surreal scenes when they found salmon swimming across a road.

Nathaniel Nagel captured the fishy activity on Skokomish Valley Road in Mason County of Washington State in November.

He said: "The Skokomish River floods frequently in the Fall, Winter and Spring months, during the rainiest times of the year."

"When it rains, the snowpack in the Skokomish River watershed melts into the river, causing it to swell, and when it rains hard enough, it floods."

"The Skokomish River Valley is not much higher than the river itself, which means the valley gets flooded quite often during the rainy months."

"After returning from the Pacific Ocean, Chum Salmon come back to the Skokomish River Valley near the location of their spawning grounds to lay their eggs and die. "

"Their return coincides with the rainy season and usually some flooding activity. The salmon get swept off course by the flood waters."

"They instinctually follow the path of the water, wherever that path may go. Even over roads."
