French tourist rescued after falling down cliff in Bali
An injured French tourist was rescued after plunging down a cliff in Indonesia.
Da Ponte Almira, 58, had left his hotel to hike up Amed Hills in the Karangasem Regency on the bustling holiday island of Bali on February 14 afternoon.
He was trekking through the dense woodland when he stumbled and fell down a 40ft ravine and injured himself.
Police launched a search for the missing Frenchman after his younger brother, with whom he had a dinner appointment that night, reported his disappearance at around 9:30 pm.
Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnyana, coordinator of the regional search and rescue office, said: 'We received a report about one foreign citizen who has not returned from hiking in Amed Hills.'
Volunteers and officers ventured into the forest and scoured it overnight for the the backpacker.
At around 7:30 am the next morning, February 15, they found the exhausted tourist sitting in a deep ravine. They helped him rappel up the steep slope and gave him first aid.
Search head Wiadnyana said: 'After it was confirmed that the victim's condition was stable and he could still walk, the joint search and rescue team and the victim travelled to the Amed Village Parking Lot for 30 minutes. Then, he was examined by the Abang Health Centre medical staff and was declared in good health.'
Indonesia's dense jungles and unpredictable weather have led to numerous cases of lost hikers, often due to straying off trails or being unprepared.
Despite numerous warnings from local authorities to always bring an experienced tour guide, some stubborn holidaymakers insist on DIY hiking, sometimes leading to their deaths.
