A hermaphrodite British Shorthair cat was neutered twice in an extremely rare case in Turkey.

The feline named Duman was adopted as a two-month-old kitten by owner Fatma Sorar, 48, who thought he was a male cat, in Adana.

Duman was taken to the vet right away for a sterilization procedure, but Fatma was confused about why he still had urges to mate with other moggies.

The cat was returned to the vets two years later this month to find out why, and medics discovered he has both male and female reproductive traits.

Footage shows Duman resting on the vet's table after the procedure as the animal doctor explains the rare condition that can happen in only one in six million cases.

Veterinarian Mete Betin said: 'Duman was brought to us as a neutered male cat. However, signs of mating continued.

'During our examination, we found that one testicle remained in the abdomen.

'During the surgery, we also saw the uterus and ovaries. In other words, we understood that Duman was a hermaphroditic cat.'

Doctor Mete added it was the first documented case in Turkey.

The medic added: 'This is the first hermaphroditic cat case we have encountered in Turkey and Adana. Such anomalies can occur due to genetic factors or hormonal irregularities.'

Fatma said they tried other treatments before thinking something was wrong with Duman until they discovered his condition.

She said: 'Even though I had Duman neutered, his mating urges continued for two years. I went to every vet I could find.

'We tried antidepressants and hormone treatments, but we couldn't find a solution. In the end, it turned out that he was hermaphrodite.

'Thanks to Mete Betin's surgery, Duman is now completely healthy.'

A hermaphrodite cat is a cat that is born with both male and female reproductive organs or characteristics. This rare condition occurs due to genetic or developmental anomalies.
