German father, 45, killed in motorbike crash in Pattaya
A German father was killed in a horror motorcycle crash in Thailand.
Mario Dieter Prade, 44, was allegedly speeding along Huay Yai Road in 'Sin City' Pattaya when his two-wheeler veered into the opposite lane, early morning on February 16.
He crashed headlong into an oncoming Toyota Fortuner and was flung from his motorcycle onto the motorway.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report about the accident at 1:36 am. They found the German husband's mangled body splayed out among debris.
Nearby was the SUV with its bonnet and front bumper crushed.
The Thai driver, Wattanawit Dasri, 28, claimed Mario had crossed onto his lane without warning. He said: 'I was driving back from a biking event. When I reached the curve, I saw a motorcycle speeding across the lane towards me. I tried to swerve, but it was too late and we crashed hard into each other.'
An onlooker who witnessed the accident and called the police said the German had indeed been driving at high speed.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Pracharak Suriya of the Huay Yai District Police Station said: 'We have inspected the scene and taken photos as evidence. We are also checking the security camera footage at the scene.
'The deceased has been taken to the Pattaya Pattamakhun Hospital, where his body will remain until his relatives provide the necessary documents to collect it.'
On February 6, an American motorbike rider was also killed in a gruesome crash, also in Pattaya City.
Leo Williams, 52, from Florida, was on a high-speed joyride when he lost control of his motorbike in the early hours of the morning. He was turning a curve but shot right into the tree-lined median strip in the Soi Thap Phraya 9 area.
The motorbike ripped through trees before toppling over in the middle of an intersection. Police later found Leo with his chest torn open.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
