STORYLINE:

On Tuesday, a group of 15 tourists from Thailand and Laos arrived at China-Laos Railway's Xishuangbanna station in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

They are the first tour group from ASEAN countries to visit the Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna since the implementation of a new visa relaxation policy.

The new policy allows tour groups from these countries to visit the prefecture, a popular tourist destination in Yunnan, visa-free for up to six days.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): JIANG JIE, Deputy director of the culture and tourism bureau of Xishuangbanna
"We've also put up multilingual signs and smart navigation stuff at different tourist spots. And at the Xishuangbanna tourism hub, we've set up a payment service center to offer foreign guests one-stop services like travel advice, transportation connections, and various payment options."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): YUHANLA, Chinese tourist guide
"Even though it's the first (visa-free travel group from ASEAN countries) to arrive in Xishuangbanna, the teams from border control, public security, travel agencies, and all the other departments have been working together really smoothly and efficiently."

The new visa policy has been in effect since Feb. 10, aimed at boosting tourism in southwest China.

It is also expected to expand opening-up, promote the exchange of personnel, and deepen the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): XIE WEIRONG, Staff of a travel agency in Xishuangbanna
"Our travel agency used to mainly receive tourists from Thailand, with some from Laos. With the favorable news of the 144 hours new visa policy, we may expand our business to Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Vietnam in the future."
