STORYLINE:
A dialogue on promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges between media organizations and think tanks of China and Japan was held in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The event, co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the Chinese embassy in Japan, brought together about 160 participants from media organizations, think tanks, and friendly groups.
At the event, Xinhua issued a think tank report titled "Promoting the Development and Progress of Human Civilization through Exchange and Mutual Learning."
Japanese attendees said that media outlets and think tanks play a vital role in promoting mutual understanding in the current international situation, amid which Japan and China should further strengthen dialogue and cultural exchanges.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Japanese): TAKASHI SASAKI, President of Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS)
"I think that the release of the report by Chinese media and think tanks to Japan and the entire world has epoch-making significance. For many Japanese media outlets, and think tanks, as well as a large number of ordinary students and the public, the opportunity to read a report issued by China is itself a very rare and meaningful experience.
I think the responsibility of the media is not only to report on high-level political and economic dynamics but also to continuously disseminate information about people-to-people exchanges, cultural interactions, and interactions among individuals. These topics are equally worthy of sustained coverage."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Japanese): UKERU MAGOSAKI, Former Japanese foreign ministry official
"For Japan, it is of great importance to have an objective and accurate understanding of China at the present time. Therefore, I would like to express my appreciation for the contributions made by both sides in this regard.
We must understand each other's civilizations and seriously contemplate how to achieve coexistence and prosperity. Now is the crucial moment to reflect on this issue."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Japanese): ATSUSHI OKUDERA, Senior international correspondent of Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun
"In areas where it is feasible, both sides should still make every effort to promote economic exchanges. This is, of course, very important. However, I believe that beyond the economy, people-to-people exchanges are equally crucial."
