Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to take control of Gaza and relocate its residents elsewhere for redevelopment.
Sanchez and Sisi made their statements during the Egyptian president's second official visit to Spain. Discussions focused on Gaza and bilateral trade.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish): PEDRO SANCHEZ, Spanish Prime Minister
"Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is a part of the future Palestinian State. Its expulsion would not only be immoral and in violation of international law and United Nations resolutions, but it would also have destabilizing effects at both regional and global levels."
Sanchez reaffirmed Spain's commitment to a two-state solution and voiced support for an Arab League proposal -- set to be discussed in Cairo early next month -- for the reconstruction of Gaza.
Sisi expressed gratitude for Spain's stance on recognizing Palestinian rights. "We both agree on the need to rebuild Gaza without the forced displacement of its population," he said.
