An overloaded truck toppled backwards as it lost its balance on a road in Thailand.

Footage shows the pickup doing an unintentional wheelie as it tilted with its front tyres in the air on the holiday island of Phuket, on February 16.

Its bulky cargo of beer bottles, fastened with ropes, had spilled out of the cargo bed. Police were at the scene on Patong Hill to redirect traffic.

Onlookers slammed the driver saying he had ventured onto the road despite his truck being overloaded.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
