A French tourist was killed when he was crushed by a truck as he cycled through an intersection in Thailand.

Camille Goossens Bernard Robert, 77, was riding a bike to go to a local restaurant when he was run over by the ten-wheeler turning at a junction in Rayong province, on February 18.

CCTV Footage shows the large vehicle knocking the cyclist off balance before driving over his body. The Frenchman reportedly died on the spot.

Police said they received a report of the accident at 5 pm. They arrived at the gruesome scene, where Camille's blood was smeared by the truck's tires on the ground near a traffic light. His red bike was toppled over next to his body.

Police Lieutenant Thanakorn Saowaro of the Phe Police Station said: ‘We have detained the truck driver for questioning and to take legal action. The deceased has been taken to Rayong Hospital for a post-mortem exam. We have also called the French Embassy to inform his family about his death.'

Camille's friend said the holidaymaker was on his way to dinner shortly before his flight back to France when the accident occurred.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
