Heavy snow caused traffic chaos in Turkey on Wednesday, with locals abandoning their cars and piling into subway stations.

Footage shows severe congestion inside the Mecidiyekoy stop of the Haciosman-Yenikapi metro line in Istanbul shortly before 6pm.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality reported congestion across the city was at a level of 90 per cent - almost reaching the maximum capacity. They said that some ferry services were suspended due to the storm's impact.

Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu reassured residents.

He said: 'As of now, there are no roads blocked within our responsibility or those of other agencies. There are no transportation routes obstructed by the snow. All roads are open.'
