Environmental authorities in India have raised concerns about high levels of faecal bacteria found in the Ganges river at Prayagraj. Over the past weeks, millions have bathed in the river during the religious Maha Kumbh Mela festival.

According to the CPCB, faecal coliform—a key indicator of sewage contamination—should not exceed the permissible limit of 2,500 units per 100 ml.

However, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh has rejected the report.
