This is the incredible moment a critically endangered Philippine Eagle chick broke out of its egg at an eagle sanctuary in the Philippines.

Footage shows the hatchling named Riley emerging from its shell in an incubator at the National Bird Breeding Sanctuary (PEF) in Davao del Sur province, on January 16.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to conserving the critically endangered raptors, said Riley's hatching came as the organisation celebrates its 38th anniversary.

It said: 'This significant event marks a groundbreaking achievement, as Riley's hatching is the first-ever documented unassisted natural hatching, a true testament to the resilience and strength of our 'PEF at 38' conservation efforts.'

Riley, previously called Chick 31 was born through artificial insemination between its parents, Sinag and Dakila. Its older sibling, Chick 30, had died just 17 days after hatching in November 2024.

The Philippine eagle is endemic to the Philippines and is classified as 'critically endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Their population is decreasing due to deforestation and accidental capture in hunters' traps.

Their reproductive rate is quite low, with a mother eagle laying only a single egg every mating season. The parents then care for the hatchling until it is ready to hunt on its own before producing another egg.
