China: Animated sensation "Ne Zha 2" propels China's February box office past 15 bln yuan

China - February 18, 2025 Fueled by the phenomenal success of the animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2", cumulative box office revenue (including presales) on the Chinese mainland from Feb 1 to 22 has passed 15 billion yuan (about 2.07 billion U.S. dollars), according to the data from the ticketing platform Maoyan. "Ne Zha 2" dominated the box office, grossing an impressive 11.45 billion yuan (about 1.58 billion U.S. dollars) in February, which accounted for 76.3 percent of the total revenue. It was followed by "Detective Chinatown 1900", which earned 2.07 billion yuan (about 285 million U.S. dollars), and "Boonie Bears: Future Reborn", with 447 million yuan (about 61.64 million U.S. dollars) in revenue. A sequel to the 2019 animated hit "Ne Zha", "Ne Zha 2" continues the story of the rebellious boy-god from Chinese mythology. Audiences have been captivated not only by its stunning visuals but also by its rich storytelling and deep cultural resonance. Since its release on the Chinese mainland on the Chinese New Year on Jan. 29, "Ne Zha 2" has shattered multiple box office records. Having already become the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time, by Friday night, its total box office revenue (including presales and overseas earnings) surpassed 13 billion yuan (about 1.79 billion U.S. dollars), securing the 8th position on the global all-time box office chart.
