STORYLINE:

The Italian Food Festival kicked off in Beijing on Friday to offer an authentic Italian culinary experience.

Italian Ambassador Massimo Ambrosetti praised the event for promoting Italian products and boosting cultural and economic exchanges between China and Italy.

"The culture of food is something that Italy and China share. We want to cooperate more. And, of course, in doing so, we have these cultural components related to food, related to healthy food, related also to regional cuisines, which is really a great strength for our further cooperation.
We are helped also by the many excellent Italian restaurants that you can find everywhere in China. There is a new generation of Chinese chefs and cooks who prepare, in a wonderful way, Italian food. So all these factors are driving the growth of our agro-food export. But I think it is very important to have initiatives like today's promotion. Because, of course, China is a very big country, is a very big market. So we need the big distribution networks."

The event is co-hosted by the Italian Trade Agency and the supermarket chain Metro.

The festival will run until June 10.
