Sharjah, United Arab Emirates - February 21, 2025 It’s the last photograph of Chilean president Salvador Allende alive, waving from the balcony of La Moneda Palace in Santiago. Taken by photographer Horacio Villalobos in the morning of the Chilean coup d’état on September 11, 1973. The Argentinian began his career as a photographer in 1965 at El Dia newspaper in La Plata, Argentina, where he was born in 1946. He followed on as freelancer for several years for prestigious international media such as UPI, AP, Time, Newsweek, Business Week and the New York Times. Villalobos also covered the Argentine coup d’état in March 1976, obtaining unique images showing the helicopter carrying President Isabel Perón that left the government palace after being arrested. He has been living in Portugal since 2016 and currently works for Getty Images Agency. A selection of Villalobos’ images is exhibited at Sharjah’s international photography festival “Xposure”.
