Tourists run as avalanche crashes down mountain in China

This is the dramatic moment tourists ran for their lives as an avalanche crashed down a mountain in China.

The sightseeing group visited Meili Snow Mountain National Park when layers of powder collapsed in Yunnan province on February 20.

Footage shows the terrified hikers screaming as massive snow surged towards them.

They were engulfed int he thick blizzard-like avalanche but quickly sought shelter in a shed, saving them from being buried.

A national park staff member said: 'It happened in an undeveloped area. There were no casualties.

'It had been sunny for two days and the snow melted faster. The chance of an avalanche was high.'

An avalanche forms when a mass of snow, ice, and debris suddenly slides down a mountain slope due to instability.
