Family flee fire on floating home on river in northern Thailand
A family fled from a fire that ripped through their wooden floating home in northern Thailand.
Footage shows the residents escaping on boats as the blaze engulfed their house on the banks of the Ping River in Lamphun province, on February 19.
Parinya Khanaasa, a teacher at the nearby Ban Ko Jatsan floating school around a kilometre away, said the blaze broke out while the family were picking up a schoolgirl Jaranya after classes.
The mother had reportedly left the stove on, causing the flames to spread through the flammable material inside the home.
Parinya said he was co-ordinating with villagers to arrange for a temporary shelter for the family. He added: 'I am discussing with my superiors about how to provide further assistance to Jaranya and her parents.'
Ban Ko Jatsan School Houseboat Branch, is a satellite branch of Ban Ko Jatsan School in Li District, Lamphun. As Thailand's only floating school, it is situated on a lake above the Bhumibol Dam at the intersection of Lamphun, Chiang Mai, and Tak provinces.
Fires in Thailand are relatively common due to aging electrical infrastructure, extensive use of wood in home construction, and regional heatwaves that can exacerbate fire risks.
