Flash floods surged through an island where the notorious Full Moon Party is held in Thailand.

Footage shows mountain runoff submerging the streets of Koh Phangan island in Surat Thani province on Monday afternoon, February 24.

Resident Panupong Ardhan said the flood swelled rapidly as heavy rain pummeled the area.

He said: 'We did not have time to evacuate because the water had already risen so high within five minutes.'

Passakorn Boonyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said Surat Thani was among several provinces being battered by the downpours.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned of more heavy rain falling in southern Thailand until February 25. The agency said residents should be careful of flash floods and forest runoff.

Waves in the lower Gulf of Thailand were forecasted to reach up to 10ft high during thunderstorms. Fishermen were urged to refrain from sailing.

The Thai Full Moon Party is a famous monthly event held on Koh Phangan, an island in southern Thailand.

It typically takes place on the night of the full moon at Haad Rin Beach, attracting thousands of partygoers from all over the world.
