SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): WANG HUI, Xinhua correspondent
"Could you please give us a brief introduction of a tunnel boring machine (TBM)?"
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): DENG JINGCHUAN, Workshop Director of China Railway Equipment Group (Tianjin) Co., Ltd.
"What we are seeing here is the tunnel boring machine (TBM). It's mainly used for subway construction, including some underwater and cross-river tunnels. This machine has a diameter of 9.48 meters, which is roughly the height of a four-story building.
This is considered a medium-sized tunnel boring machine, but there are even larger ones, with diameters of 15 meters, 16 meters, and even 18 meters. This part is called the "roller cutter," and this is the "scraper." They serve different functions: the roller cutter crushes the rock into strips, and then the scraper shatters the rock further. Once broken up, the material enters the soil chamber, and small "trains," like little mine carts, transport the soil out of the tunnel."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Tianjin, China.
