Engineers are continuing the refurbishment of Stockport viaduct in England.

Seven railway workers abseiled down the Grade II listed Stockport Viaduct as part of a 1.1million GBP restoration on February 23.

Built in 1840, the viaduct spans the M60 and carries nearly 400 trains daily between the West Coast Main Line and Manchester Piccadilly.

Drone footage shows views of the viaduct landmark with the team at work.

The project, launched by Network Rail last year, addresses overgrown vegetation, graffiti removal, and repairs to the viaduct's 11 million bricks.

Michael Lally, Network Rail's Works Delivery manager, said: 'The team has done a fantastic job this week carrying out important repairs to the viaduct arches that cross the M60 in Stockport. This is the final stage of the project, which started last year.

'The recent work means the overall appearance of the viaduct is much improved, but it also reduces the risk of damage caused by overgrown vegetation and graffiti.

Lally added that controlling plant growth is crucial for railway safety, as trees and shrubs can obstruct signals and overhead lines.

The revamp preserves a piece of Britain's railway heritage and ensures smoother journeys for passengers.

The M60 is closed between junctions 27 and 1 from February 17 to March 2. The road beneath the viaduct is shut nightly from 10 pm to 6 am for workers' access.
