A heartbroken man who lost his fiancée to cancer is walking around 5,000 miles to Ghana- to spread her ashes.

Daniel Forrester, 47, lost his partner Caroline Sarpong, 45, on November 11 after a long battle with colon cancer.

Now, he is travelling on foot from the Essex hospice Caroline spent her final days in, all the way to Kumasi in Ghana - to fulfil his final promise to the late mum-of-two.

This dangerous trip across the African continent will see him pass through areas of "extreme heat", political unrest and even face potential threats of "kidnapping"."

But the dad-of-three is determined to complete the year-long expedition to spread Caroline's ashes in the place she called home from age seven to 19.

Although his final itinerary has not been confirmed yet, his current route will take him through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea, the Ivory Coast and into Ghana.

Daniel, from Dartford, Kent, said: "Crossing Guinea and the Ivory Coast means travelling near the borders of Mali and Burkina Faso, where the threat of kidnapping of westerners is extremely high from Islamic extremists."

"There are lots of dangers to this challenge, from the extreme heat of the desert and big cats to chimps in the jungle."

"Then of course we have the human threat of kidnapping, robberies and extortion, and political unrest in a few of the countries."

When the pair first met in 2023, Daniel says he was struck by Caroline's "beauty, her kindness, her selflessness and her zest for life."

He added: "She was everything I'd ever wanted for a partner."

It was during one of the last conversation's that Daniel and Caroline had before she passed away, when he told her he intended to walk her ashes to Ghana to "take her home"."

Recalling Caroline's response, her words were: "Would you do that for me?"

"Of course I would," Daniel replied, and he remembers her being so happy to hear this."

Despite a previous stint in remission and various rounds of chemotherapy and treatment, Caroline passed away in November last year- less than 10 months after the pair had got engaged.

The mum had spent her final days in St Francis Hospice in Romford, Essex, for symptom management as her health had begun to deteriorate.

Now, as part of his walk, Daniel is fundraising for the hospice who looked after Caroline in the final stage of her life.

The journey, which begins on September 20, will be documented on his Facebook account - The Carovan of Love.

Daniel, who will be giving up his landscaping job to complete the walk, added: "My aim now is to raise as much money for charity as humanly possible."
