A toddler's foot was shredded by a faulty escalator at a shopping mall in the Philippines.

Aliyah Estrella, 4, screamed in pain when her left foot slipped between the metal plates and was torn up by the machinery at the Mall of Asia in the capital Manila on January 25.

A passing shopper pressed the emergency stop button to cut the power to the device but the girl's flesh had already been ripped apart - with her bones exposed.

Aliyah was rushed to a hospital, where doctors stitched up the gruesome injury.

Heartbreaking footage shows Aliyah crying while sitting in a wheelchair. Her mother, Einna Alyssa Estrella, caressed her foot in a cast while trying to comfort her.

The family said they had travelled two hours away from their home in Laguna province, some 60 miles (95km) south of the capital, to enjoy their Saturday out.

Einna said her daughter had been wearing Crocs-style knockoff rubber shoes that were sucked into the platform as they were ascending the escalator.

Speaking on February 24 about the incident, Einna said: 'I felt weak when I saw what happened to my daughter's foot. The tendons were exposed, the flesh was crushed, and there was bleeding everywhere.

'The skin had peeled from her toes, but I thank God she didn't suffer any fractures.

'When the accident happened, all I could think of was to scream for help while my daughter was howling in pain. She suffered so much and she was traumatised because her foot still hurts every day. I keep thinking it would have been better if I were the one in an accident.'

The disgruntled mother added that the mall had only paid for the initial medical expenses, leaving the family to shoulder the remaining fees for a wheelchair, medication, and follow-up medical exams. They were waiting for Aliyah to recover before having her undergo physical therapy.

She said: 'It has been a month since the accident and Aliyah still can't walk. Her wounds still haven't healed.

'No mother wants their child to suffer like this. I had no idea the rubber slippers would be so dangerous. I hope no one else experiences the same pain. Parents should always be careful with their children, and avoid wearing rubber slippers when riding escalators.'
