When a gorilla at the San Francisco Zoo became pregnant last year - a rare occurrence for animals in captivity - staffers and veterinarians contacted neonatal experts at University of California San Francisco Benihoff Children's Hospital to consult them on the birth.

Ten weeks ago, the endangered western lowland gorilla named Nneka delivered a healthy baby girl in her enclosure, but rejected her soon after.Zookeepers tried to trick Nneka into nursing her baby by leaving her in the pen and keeping their distance, but the mum showed no interest in caring for her child.
This video shows the incredible moment the baby gorilla is born and then rejected by its mother. The birth is here recorded, as well as the aftermath showing the neglect exhibited towards the newborn.
Instead of her mother, the hairy little tike is now being cared for around the clock by a pair of zookeepers who feed her from a bottle, sleep by her side at night and make gorilla sounds.
