US: Chinese envoy calls for immediate ceasefire, more targeted support for war-torn Sudan
New York, United States - February 26, 2025 A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire to address the severe humanitarian crisis in war-torn Sudan, urging the international community to provide more targeted support to the beleaguered African country. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Sudan, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, commended the efforts of UN agencies and humanitarian workers who are conducting relief operations under extremely dangerous conditions. China calls on the international community to provide greater, more targeted support to Sudan and its neighboring countries, helping these countries strengthen their humanitarian response capabilities to better address the challenges posed by conflict spillover, refugee dispersion, the spread of infectious diseases, and food insecurity, Fu emphasized. Fu underscored that only a ceasefire can fundamentally ease the humanitarian crisis. He also highlighted that the Security Council had adopted a resolution last year calling for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan. He said China once again urges all parties to the conflict to lay down their arms, cease violence, strengthen unity, and bring an end to the fighting, so that peace may come as soon as possible. Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since mid-April 2023, which claimed at least 29,683 lives, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, a crisis monitoring group cited by the United Nations. The conflict has also displaced over 15 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to estimates by the International Organization for Migration.
