Mpigi, Uganda - February 25, 2025 Uganda security held 30 Tanzanian nationals for illegal fishing on Lake Victoria waters Uganda security authorities on Wednesday arrested 30 Tanzanian nationals for illegal fishing on Lake Victoria water in the Central Region of Uganda. Uganda People’s Defence force(UPDF), Marine Commander in Charge of Central Region, Capt. Jacob Obbo, said that the 30 Tanzanian nationals were arrested after entering Lake Victoria water and carrying on illegal fishing on the Ugandan side. “Our UPDF marine team and Uganda Police managed to intercept them as they were carrying on illegal fishing on the Ugandan side of Lake Victoria water. When they saw us, they tried to throw out illegal fish gear nets and machetes in the water, but we managed to get them,” he said. Obbo said that the suspects were all brought on the mainland together with their boats (that are camped) at Buwama in the central region and transferred to Mpigi police station. Capt. Obbo said that the suspects were brought to the Mpigi police station situation in the central region for interrogation and later will be taken to court and charged with illegal fishing and entering the country illegally. Saka Vicent, a local fisherman on Lake Victoria, Buwama, Mpigi central region, said that some fisherman from Tanzania enter Ugandan waters and use illegal fish nets to catch immature fish. Joseph Kigozi fisherman, Mpigi, said that the government should put in more stringent measures to ensure that all fishermen, especially from neighboring countries like Tanzania and Kenya, do not carry on their business of dealing and catching immature fish. Lake Victoria is shared by the three countries in which Kenya occupies 6 percent, Uganda 45 percent, and Tanzania 49 percent.
