Mexico: Popocatepetl Volcano Unleashes Fury with Explosive Activity and Ash Rain
Puebla, Mexico - February 27, 2025 The Popocatépetl volcano, one of the nation’s most active volcanic giants, erupted with 30 exhalations and over an hour of tremor on February 27, rattling the regions of Morelos, Puebla, and the State of Mexico where it looms large. According to the daily monitoring by the National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), these outbursts unleashed plumes of water vapor, volcanic gases, and light ash into the skies. The restless volcano, affectionately nicknamed "Don Goyo," didn’t stop there. Experts recorded 74 minutes of low-amplitude harmonic tremor segments, signaling ongoing unrest beneath its fiery surface. By morning, a faint but continuous stream of water vapor and volcanic gases drifted east-southeast, casting an eerie veil over the landscape. Currently, Popocatépetl sits at Yellow Phase 2 on the Volcanic Alert Traffic Light system, as designated by Cenapred and UNAM. This warning level hints at a volatile future, with potential scenarios including minor to moderate explosions, tremors of varying intensity, and light to moderate ashfall over nearby towns and even distant cities. Glowing fragments could rain down within a 12-kilometer exclusion zone, while mudflows—known as lahars—might carve through ravines if ash on the slopes mixes with anticipated rains in the coming weeks. Though unlikely to reach populated areas, pyroclastic flows remain a chilling possibility. Authorities are sounding the alarm, urging people to steer clear of the volcano, particularly its crater, where ballistic fragments pose a deadly risk. Should heavy rains lash the region, residents are warned to avoid ravine bottoms, where torrents of mud and debris could surge without warning. For now, Don Goyo’s fiery temper holds the region in suspense, a reminder of nature’s untamed power.
