The First Ocean Decade International Coastal Cities Conference concluded Thursday in Qingdao, east China's Shandong Province.
The two-day conference was hosted by the Qingdao Municipal People's Government in collaboration with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO).
Themed "Better Ocean, Better City," the conference was held to facilitate knowledge exchange and experience sharing on blue economy, climate change, and science-based solutions for sustainable development of coastal cities.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JULIAN BARBIERE, Head of Marine Policy and Regional Coordination Section, IOC-UNESCO
"We demand more from the ocean, but we need to be smarter in the way we use it without impacting it. And I think China is realizing this very early, and it has been a very active player in the blue economy system and also has been providing support to other countries around the world in helping them to define and develop the blue economy."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): NELLY FLORIDA RIAMA, Deputy head of Geophysics, Indonesia Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG)
"China is one of the leading countries that really has very impressive development on weather and climate. So this conference is very important for us because we want to engage more and more with other cities, especially because the focus of this conference is on UN Ocean Decade on coastal cities."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): MENG QINGSHENG, Director of Qingdao Municipal Marine Development Bureau
"The conference has helped foster Qingdao's marine technology, marine culture, and marine industry, facilitating collaboration and mutual development among Qingdao and other coastal cities worldwide. The conference also provided us with some solutions and sample demonstrations for our work."
