Bulgaria: Far-right activists - Lukovmarch 2025
Sofia, Bulgaria - February 22, 2025 In the era of the rise of far-right organizations in Europe, one of the most well known neo-Nazi events was held in Sofia – Lukovmarch, organized in honor of General Hristo Lukov – war minister of Bulgaria between 1935 and 1938, considered as a close allie to the Nazi regime in Germany at that time. Far-right activists of Bulgarian National Union and their European friends gathered in front of the Lukov's house. They lit the torches that for another year they were not allowed to carry on the streets, uttered words of pride in the nationalist symbol that Lukov represents, presented flowers to his house, sang patriotic songs and shouted his name. Earlier, the activists gathered in front of the "St. Nedelya" church and, under strict police control, walked along the last steps of Gen. Hristo Lukov to his home, where he was killed by the communists. They left hundreds of lit candles along his last steps because the Lukov March took place on All Souls' Day. Every year, activists find a way to mark the anniversary with lit torches despite the authorities' ban – government take it for unacceptable Neo-nazi manifestation, despite that far-right activists consider Lukov a forgotten great military person. It is considered to be а rare expression of neo-Nazi spirit held in European capital, always under the protest of almost all foreign embassies, human rights organizations. It has been organized since 2003 bringing together far-right activists from all over the Europe.
