STORYLINE:
BMW Group's Munich plant will be transformed into a fully electric vehicle (EV) production base by 2027, the German automaker announced Thursday.
The plant is also accelerating preparations for producing "Neue Klasse" (New Generation) EV models, which are set to begin production in the summer of 2026.
BMW Group predicts significant growth in global demand for EVs by 2030. To meet this demand, the Munich plant will be the first to undergo transformation to enhance the group's EV production capacity.
Currently, the Munich plant is constructing three new production halls covering body manufacturing, final assembly, and related production logistics to ensure the smooth production of the "Neue Klasse" EV models, said the group.
By optimizing production processes and precision automation configurations, the Munich plant will further reduce manufacturing costs and improve overall production efficiency, said Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): PETER WEBER, Plant Director, BMW Group Plant Munich
"Our production system is very much focused on efficiency, flexibility, and innovation. And regarding innovation, we are very much focused on speed and effectiveness. So when we reflect on increasing the level of digitalization or automation, we always focus on how can we improve our process in terms of flexibility, efficiency, quality, and so on."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MILAN NEDELJKOVIC, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Production, BMW Group
"It's a game of digitalization, but at a new level. We're talking of AI. We're talking of new systems being implemented. New fields of automation are opening. So the whole relevance of this era is, from our perspective, similar to what we've seen 50 years ago and that's why we call it the Neue Klasse. It is just the symbol of the future."
