STORYLINE:

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Friday reaffirmed the Lebanese army's role in defending Lebanon, ensuring national security, protecting its people, and safeguarding sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

During a visit to the southern border region, Salam praised the army's efforts to strengthen deployment and stabilize the south, enabling residents to return to their villages and homes, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.

Salam reiterated the government's commitment to bolstering the military through increased manpower, equipment, training, and improved conditions to enhance defensive capabilities.

He acknowledged the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed since 1978, for its cooperation with the Lebanese army in implementing Resolution 1701 to promote security and stability in Lebanon.

Salam also condemned attacks on UNIFIL forces, vowing to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future incidents.
