STORYLINE:
Transatlantic trade tensions have escalated following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25 percent tariff on European imports, with European countries warning that Europe will react "firmly and immediately" against unjustified barriers.
Here is what Italian scholars have to say on U.S. tariff hikes in recent interviews with Xinhua.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Italian): OLIVIERO DILIBERTO, Italy's former justice minister, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Sapienza University of Rome
"The global economy is in great difficulty due to worldwide political instability, wars, and the 'might makes right' logic where the strongest seeks to impose their own will on others rather than to formulate fair rules jointly.
For example, U.S. President Donald Trump is implementing a tariff policy, introducing tariff barriers and trade restrictions.
This approach is wrong and counterproductive.
Because the world has been globalized. Only through cooperation, removing barriers rather than building new walls, can the world progress together."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GUIDO ALBERTO CASANOVA, Junior research fellow, Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI) Asia Center
"I believe that Trump's tariffs will be a challenge. Europe has been a target of his 'America First' policies. To avoid the worst-case scenario, Europe must find a way to engage with Trump and entice him into a compromise. Globalization may be changing its shape, but the global community still needs a shared set of common rules."
