STORYLINE:
Sudan achieved a record increase in gold output in 2024 amid the ongoing armed conflict, according to government statistics.
Sudan produced a total of 64.4 tonnes of gold in 2024, generating about 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in government revenue, according to a report released by Sudan's Mineral Resources Company on Thursday.
Sudanese Minister of Minerals, Mohamed Bashir Abdullah Abu Nammu, attributed the increase in the country's gold production in 2024 to several factors, including the fact that most of the production areas remain unaffected by the ongoing conflict.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic): MOHAMED BASHIR ABDULLAH ABU NAMMU, Sudanese Minister of Minerals
"90 percent of the gold-producing areas in Sudan are safe areas which have not been affected by the war. These areas include Northern, River Nile, Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, and Blue Nile States. As these areas remained unaffected by the conflict, production remained largely stable, which is one of the reasons for the significant increase in gold output."
Sudan relies primarily on gold exports to obtain foreign currency.
